Flat Iron Square is putting Southwark on the map – but what’s on offer?
All eyes were on Flat Iron Square this summer as crowds descended to watch the World Cup on large screens.
But it’s not just footie that has made this a much-loved summer hangout.
Southwark’s foodie hub, which launched in October 2016, takes over seven railway arches.
It’s a mouth-watering offer: street-food kitchens, food trucks and restaurants. There’s even a huge music venue, a weekly flea market and a craft-leather pop-up shop.
Flat Iron Square is the first stop on London’s Low Line, an ambitious long term project to open up a world-class walking route along the base of the rail viaduct in Bankside.
The plan is to link the neighbourhoods between London Bridge and Waterloo, Blackfriars and Elephant and Castle.
Expect a buzz during weekends as the Sunday vintage flea market takes over. There’s artisan craft goods alongside stalls selling vintage clothing, art, books and textiles.
When it comes to food on the go we recommend Ekachai, which offers classic Thai, Malay and Cantonese street food dishes. Try out their sweet siu mai dumplings and Malaysian fried rice.
Lazy (or hangover) Sundays must be spent at Where the Pancakes Are. Here you’ll find delicious savoury and sweet buttermilk pancakes. You can’t book a table at the weekends but be patient, join the queue – it’s well worth it.
If all that eating and browsing leaves you craving a sundowner you can catch the evening rays on Omeara’s outdoor terrace. The live music venue, opened by Mumford & Son’s Ben Lovett, boasts stunning views of the Shard.
As if that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, a free music festival is coming to the square in September.
Common Ground festival will take place every Saturday throughout September. The family-friendly event welcomes an eclectic line-up of artists and DJs every Saturday from 12pm to 12am.
